Since 1941, the United States has held a tradition of Independence Day celebrations that date back to the 18th century and the American Revolution, 1775-83. In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies fighting in the revolutionary struggle, weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until today, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Please remember the sacrifice of our military who serve every day to protect our freedoms; remember our legislators who work every day to establish sensible and results oriented policies; and remember all the blessings we have in our daily lives and how lucky we are as Americans.

Happy Independence Day and have a blessed and safe Fourth of July!

Opportunities continue to flourish on the South Side!

I was extremely pleased to be joined this past week by my colleagues Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Commissioner Paul Elizondo, and Commissioner Tommy Adkisson to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Mission Concepción Sports Park. The celebration was added upon by the blessing from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller. Many members of the community who have long awaited the opening of the MCSP facility expressed much appreciation to Bexar County Commissioners Court and project partner the Archdiocese.

The Mission Concepción Sports Park was made possible through collaborative partnerships and was developed to revitalize the South Side of Bexar County and San Antonio. This sports complex is going to have a tremendous impact on the surrounding area by attracting schools and various sporting leagues from around the state to Bexar County. I am extremely excited that this facility is located in the heart of Precinct 1 on the South Side. It is truly a state of the art facility with so many wonderful amenities for our community to enjoy and is certainly the first of its kind in Precinct 1. My gratitude to my colleagues on Commissioners Court for supporting projects like this on the South Side is undying.

When we gathered together during January of 2011 to break ground on this collaborate endeavor, I never imagined how state of the art this facility would flourish to become. The $16.1 million project sits on 35 acres of land owned by the church and includes a gymnasium with 6 basketball courts that can convert to 12 volleyball courts, improved softball and baseball fields, a track with lighting, a concession area, seating for spectators, and trails that will tie the park into the historic Mission Concepción and the Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration Project on the San Antonio River.

Archbishop García-Siller expressed “it is a great blessing to be able to open the Mission Concepción Sports Park on land that has been a site for family, faith and joy in the Archiocese for 350 years, which will not be a site that continues to serve our youth, in promoting wellness and development in San Antonio. In a special way, these grounds are another resource that can serve the needs of our people, especially in the poor among us and our families that will find here a place to grow in unity and joy.”

The Bexar County Community Venue Projects Program funding was made possible in May 2008 when the residents of Bexar County and San Antonio overwhelmingly voted to extend the visitor tax to fund the community based projects.  A 5 percent short‐term motor vehicle tax provides $80 million for 13 sports complexes and a combination of the car rental tax and a 1.75 percent hotel occupancy tax to provide $125 million for the San Antonio River Improvements Project, $110 million for the Tobin Performing Arts Center and cultural venues, and $100 million for improvements to the Community Arenas and grounds. Bexar County’s voter‐approved visitor tax revenue is helping to fund the construction of a total of 13 amateur sports venues throughout Bexar County. These amateur sports complexes enhance the community by adding 46 soccer fields, 23 baseball diamonds, 6 football fields, 2 tracks, 2 cross‐country courses, 1 fencing facility, 1 basketball/volleyball tournament facility, and 1 outdoor swimming stadium.

I am extremely proud of the development that has come to the South Side and Precinct 1 during the past 8 years. My colleagues on Commissioners Court are rooted in the South Side and all of our success in the South would not be possible without their support for me and my Precinct 1 community. To borrow a quote from John K. Kennedy, “things do not happen, things are made to happen.” Thank you to all who support the development and funded projects in Precinct 1. I will continue to make sure that as the community of Precinct 1 grows, so do the projects, development, services, and opportunities.

Thank you!

Sen Leticia Van de Putte asks you to vote to re-elect Chico!

“This is Senator Leticia Van de Putte, asking you to re-elect your county commissioner, Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez, in the Democratic Primary.

Chico delivers results for our community.

Voting to fund healthcare for women like free mammograms and medical equipment for those in need.

And he cares about our kids by raising more scholarship money for them.

Chico es un verdadero serviente de la communidad.

And I’m sad to say his opponent is slinging mud only to hide her record.

We don’t walk folks pocketing your tax dollars and using public office for personal profit.

Again this is Senator Leticia Van de Putte asking you to re-elect Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez in the Democratic Primary.

Thank you.”
